About Pioneer Square
Pioneer Square was founded in 1852, shortly after the city of Seattle was established. It is named after a small park located in the center of the neighborhood, which was dedicated in 1909 to honor Seattle’s pioneers.
The neighborhood was originally settled by merchants and businesspeople who were attracted to the area because of its proximity to the city’s waterfront. The Great Seattle Fire of 1889 destroyed much of the neighborhood, but it was quickly rebuilt above the old ruins, and many of the buildings constructed at that time still stand today.
Pioneer Square is now a vibrant and diverse neighborhood that is home to a mix of businesses, restaurants, and shops, as well as several historic landmarks and cultural institutions. It is also a popular tourist destination, with attractions such as the Underground Tour, which takes visitors through the subterranean tunnels and passageways that were created in the aftermath of the Great Seattle Fire.
In terms of real estate, Pioneer Square is known for its historic buildings and loft-style apartments. Many of the buildings in the neighborhood were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and have been renovated and converted into modern living spaces. The neighborhood has seen a surge in development in recent years, with several new high-rise apartment buildings and office towers being constructed in and around the neighborhood.
