Living In Mercer Island

Mercer Island, affectionately known as “The Rock”, is a medium sized city in the heart of Lake Washington between Seattle & Bellevue. This special island has received increased popularity and national acclaim, ranking #27 best neighborhood in the United States by Business Insider in 2015 and in 2018 Money Magazine named it the best place to live in Washington.

The Duwamish Tribe never inhabited the island as they believed it was haunted – believing the island sank into the lake each evening before resurfacing. Undeterred, the Mercer family established a small community on the island in the late 19th Century. The island was slow to develop however until bridges connected it to the rest of Seattle and island incorporated as a city in 1970.

Mercer Island, WA Guide

What to Expect

A lot of residents cite the strong Mercer Island schools as their reason for moving – the island’s elementary school regularly wins Washington Achievement Awards and has a great PTA. Mercer Island is close-knit, with ample friendly neighbors who lead active lifestyles. The islands walking trails are well used!

The Lifestyle

Mercer Island has made a concerted effort in recent years to revitalize its town center – meaning downtown is now the place to go to gather for shopping and eating. The condos and apartments here offer plenty to their residents and the new lightrail service will seamlessly connect Mercer Island to both Bellevue and Seattle. Grocery stores and the Mercer Island Farmers Market mean all you could ever need is on the island.

The locals mostly work in either Seattle or Bellevue and depending on traffic it takes about 15-30 minutes to get to either. The airport meanwhile is only 30-45 minutes away.

The Unexpected Appeal

Greenery is a priority in Mercer Island, with the residents guarding the public spaces and parks fervently. They are well maintained full of amenities. Luther Burbank Park – my personal favorite, is a stunning 77 acre parcel on the north end of the island on Lake Washington. It has tennis courts, boat ramps, a dog park. There is so much more to explore however with over 50 miles of walking trails on Mercer Island.

You'll Fall in Love With

The escape from work. Mercer Island is ideal for those who want to check out after hours and enjoy the tranquility and ease the island offers. Uncompromising on convenience with its location, its a little oasis smack in the middle of the Greater Seattle region. You’d never know the island is home to over 24,000 people.
