Living In Mercer Island
Mercer Island, affectionately known as “The Rock”, is a medium sized city in the heart of Lake Washington between Seattle & Bellevue. This special island has received increased popularity and national acclaim, ranking #27 best neighborhood in the United States by Business Insider in 2015 and in 2018 Money Magazine named it the best place to live in Washington.
The Duwamish Tribe never inhabited the island as they believed it was haunted – believing the island sank into the lake each evening before resurfacing. Undeterred, the Mercer family established a small community on the island in the late 19th Century. The island was slow to develop however until bridges connected it to the rest of Seattle and island incorporated as a city in 1970.
